Launched in 1999, European Eyes on Japan / Japan Today invites photographers active in Europe to Japan to record for posterity images of Japan’s various prefectures based on the theme of Japanese people and how they live their lives today. The aim of the project is providing an opportunity for Japanese to reacquaint themselves with aspects of our daily lives that we tend to overlook and for Europeans to become more familiar with what till now may have been the distant presence of a Far Eastern country and thereby deepen their understanding of Japan. The glimpses of Japan captured from the unique and new perspective of each photographer differ tremendously from those conveyed by mass media or stereotypical images of Japan. To date, 56 photographers have photographed in 35 prefectures around Japan. The project is carried out every year, with the intent that all 47 prefectures ultimately be photographed. This year presented by Alexander Gronsky from Riga and Nina Korhonen from Stockholm.
