Danish photographer Jan Grarup (1968) is known for his reporting from war zones and African countries afflicted by draught, disease and religious or national prejudice. The exhibition focuses on Somalia and its people, who having been living in the terror of war for over 20 years. The long-running draught that has taken over the country in recent years has made life even more unbearable for Somalis. The exhibition tells the story of people trapped between war, poverty and desperation. However, Grarup declares that Somalis are the greatest, loveliest people he has ever met, who despite everything have not lost hope for a better life. During his career, photojournalist Jan Grarup has reported from the Gulf War, the siege of Sarajevo and the Rwandan genocide. Grarup’s work reflects his belief in photojournalism as a witness and instrument of change – a way to voice the stories of those who are powerless to tell their own. The photographer has received numerous major awards and his work has been acknowledged by human rights organizations.
